A series of burglaries targeting homes in several parts of Germany led to an investigation into an alleged criminal group made up of Romanian nationals. According to investigators, the suspects allegedly operated in a coordinated way, targeting houses from which they stole cash, jewellery, gold items and other valuables.

87 burglaries in one district alone

In the Wittenberg district of Saxony-Anhalt, police recorded 87 burglaries between autumn 2024 and spring 2026. Dozens of other cases were reported in Saxony, Thuringia, Brandenburg and Bavaria, including areas along the A9 motorway.

According to the investigation, the incidents often took place around dusk. The suspects allegedly forced doors or windows, entered homes and left within minutes, before residents or authorities could intervene. The A9 motorway is believed to have provided an important route for making a quick getaway after the burglaries.

Nearly 300 police officers took part in searches

Investigators identified a group of around 13 people, aged between 20 and 47, who were reportedly living in Berlin, Halle and Leipzig. Members of the group are suspected of selecting targets in advance and acting in a coordinated manner.

In March 2026, German authorities carried out a major operation involving nearly 300 police officers. Searches were conducted at properties in Berlin, Leipzig and Halle. Investigators reportedly found cash, jewellery, expensive clothing, mobile phones and firearms. Several luxury cars, including Porsche and Audi models, were also identified, Spiegel reported.

Investigators suspect that some of the proceeds from the alleged criminal activity may have been used to buy luxury cars and properties in Romania.

Six suspects in pre-trial detention

Six men believed to be members of the group are being held in pre-trial detention. According to reports on the case, their trial began in October 2026.

The investigation concerns alleged offences committed over approximately 18 months across several German states. The scale of the case is reflected both in the number of burglaries attributed to the group and in their geographic spread.

Authorities are continuing to establish each suspect’s alleged role and the links between burglaries recorded in different regions.
