The incident took place on Sunday, 4 October 2026, on Lippeloseweg. According to Rivierenland Police, a man forced a window and searched several rooms. The resident heard noises and went to investigate, prompting the intruder to flee on foot and get into a waiting car driven by an accomplice.
A rapid police response
Police were notified at around 14:40. Based on the witness’s description, the vehicle was flagged in the ANPR automatic number-plate recognition system. At 14:48, officers from the BRUNO police zone stopped it in Schaerbeek, Brussels, and arrested both occupants.
The men, aged 33 and 35 and both Romanian nationals, were travelling in a car with Polish registration plates. Police found jewellery and cash taken from the house, as well as a flashlight, gloves, a neck warmer or face covering, and a screwdriver. The vehicle and the suspected burglary tools were seized.
Remanded in custody
The two men were referred to the public prosecutor and appeared before an investigating judge on Monday, 5 October. The judge ordered their arrest and detention in Mechelen prison. The investigation is continuing, and the men remain suspects; guilt can only be determined by a court.
The case shows how witness information and ANPR technology can help police locate a suspected vehicle quickly. Most importantly for the victim, the stolen jewellery and money were recovered and returned on the same day.
