A new violent incident involving federal immigration officers has sparked outrage in New York. At about 4 p.m. local time on Thursday, an agent with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shot and wounded a man who was in his car in Marble Hill, in the Bronx. His five-year-old child was also in the vehicle and, according to preliminary reports, was not physically injured.

What happened

According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), the shooting occurred during a confrontation involving federal agents. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said preliminary reports indicated that ICE officers surrounded the car carrying the man and his child before several shots were fired. “We believe the young child is physically unharmed,” he wrote on X.

Mamdani: “Abolish ICE”

Mamdani described the incident as “unacceptable and extremely serious.” He said he had called President Donald Trump and would ask him to halt ICE enforcement operations in New York when they spoke.

“I will not sit idly by while ICE terrorizes our communities. ICE must get out of our neighborhoods. ICE must get out of our hospitals. ICE must get off our streets. ICE must stay away from our children. Abolish ICE,” the mayor said in an official statement.

The federal authorities’ account

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees ICE, said officers were carrying out a “targeted law-enforcement operation” to arrest the man, a 28-year-old Dominican citizen whom the department described as being in the United States unlawfully. DHS said he had a previous conviction for grand larceny and had been arrested multiple times on allegations involving assault, robbery, drugs and weapons.

“During the incident, an ICE officer discharged their weapon, and the criminal illegal alien was wounded. ICE officers immediately provided medical assistance. The individual is alive and is being treated at a local hospital,” DHS said.

In its initial statement, DHS also alleged that the man had ties to the Trinitarios gang. The department later issued a revised version that removed that claim, without explaining why. DHS has not released the man’s name or supplied evidence supporting its statements about his criminal history or alleged gang connections.

Protests and reactions

Hundreds of people took to the streets in the Bronx after the shooting, carrying signs reading “Shut down all killer ICE agents” and “Leave our neighbors alone.” Protesters also gathered outside the hospital where the wounded man was being treated. Tensions rose when some demonstrators tried to block vehicles leaving the hospital; police intervened to move them back and set up barricades.

Vanessa Gibson, the Bronx borough president, said: “ICE, get the hell out of our neighborhood! I’m angry that we have to be here… We are a working-class community. We do not deserve this kind of treatment from the White House.”

Jumaane Williams, New York City’s public advocate, used the slogans “Fuck ICE” and “Fuck Trump” and urged people with privilege to stand up for those who are vulnerable.

New York governor calls for transparency

Governor Kathy Hochul said she had spoken with President Trump and conveyed New Yorkers’ “outrage.” She called for the release of footage from ICE officers’ body-worn cameras so the facts could be established and “the truth” brought to light.

A wider pattern of violent incidents

The shooting comes amid broader controversy over federal immigration enforcement. Since the start of President Trump’s second term, ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers have arrested tens of thousands of people and been involved in numerous shootings, with at least 11 deaths reported. A similar incident in Minneapolis in January killed a U.S. citizen and prompted large protests.

New York, a Democratic stronghold, restricts local police cooperation with federal immigration authorities. Mamdani, who has taken a strong public stance against ICE operations, has pledged to continue opposing them in the city.
