A bloody confrontation between two families from Prahova and Ialomița turned a quiet street into a battlefield. The Ialomița Tribunal convicted all 40 defendants; the man who fired the fatal shots received the harshest sentence. The case is a stark lesson in the consequences of taking justice into one’s own hands.

On February 8, 2025, around 5:00 p.m., the residents of Urziceni municipality became witnesses to a scene taken from an action movie. It was not a military exercise, not a parade. It was a direct confrontation between two armed groups, from Prahova and Ialomita counties, who had set out to resolve an old dispute by force. The result was a real slaughter: two people died, and six others were injured, four of them by shooting.
More than a year and a half after the incident, the judiciary had its say. On Friday, October 23, 2026, the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Bucharest Court of Appeal announced that the Ialomița Tribunal pronounced the sentence in this case. All 40 defendants sent to court were found guilty. For one of them, he was sentenced to life imprisonment.
How the street war started
According to the investigators, the conflict was not a simple fit of rage. It was a premeditated confrontation, planned in cold blood. Everything started from an older tense state between two families from Prahova and Ialomița. Although one of the parties would have proposed an agreement, the other categorically refused and decided to do justice to himself.
Thus, on that day, the members of one of the groups got into several cars and went to Urziceni for a direct confrontation. They did not come unprepared. Both camps had been armed in advance with lethal and non-lethal firearms, clubs, axes, crowbars, knives and machetes. What followed was a “private justice” of extreme violence, which threw the city into a state of shock.
Punishments: from life imprisonment to hard years in prison
The Ialomița Court individualized the punishments according to the role of each defendant. The court held that both murder and attempted murder were committed with premeditation, which led to extremely severe sanctions.
Here’s what the list of sentences looks like:
- Life imprisonment: Daniel Balia, the man who fired several shots with lethal ammunition in the direction of the opposing group and caused the death of the two people, received the heaviest punishment in the Criminal Code.
- 29 years in prison: Florian Balia, known by the nickname “Vică”.
- 26 years in prison: Marin Panciu, known as “Catană”.
- 21 years in prison: Alexandru Canțur, known as “Sandu de la Tunari”.
- 20 years in prison: Florin Panciu (“Porumbel”), Ionel Constantin (“Uruiala”) and Eugen Balia.
- Between 19 years and 4 months and 29 years: Another 18 defendants from the group that went to Urziceni, for complicity in qualified murder and attempted qualified murder. Two of them were also convicted for trying to kill: one fired an shotgun at two people, and the other hit a man in the head with a machete.
- Between 11 years and 8 months and 14 years and 4 months: Five accomplices.
- Between 4 years and 8 months and 6 years and 8 months: 14 other major defendants.
- Educational measure: A defendant who was a minor at the time of the facts received the measure of daily assistance for five months.
In addition to the prison sentences, the court ordered the seizure of some of the defendants’ assets, with total ceilings of 14 million euros, to guarantee possible compensation to the victims. The judges also ordered the confiscation of all weapons, ammunition and blunt objects seized during the investigation.
A sentence that is not final
It is important to specify that the decision of the Ialomița Tribunal is one in the first instance. The sentence was handed down on October 21, 2026 and can be appealed. However, the extent of the punishments and the fact that all 40 defendants were found guilty is a strong signal from the judiciary.
Conclusion
What happened in Urziceni is not just an isolated incident of urban violence. It is a demonstration of how resentment, wounded honor and lack of trust in institutions can degenerate into primitive forms of private justice. Two families decided to resolve their conflict on the street, with firearms and machetes, turning an entire city into spectators of a war that was not theirs.
The court imposed severe sentences. Life imprisonment for the author of the double murder and decades of detention to accomplices send a clear message: the state will not tolerate private justice. It remains to be seen whether this sentence will discourage other groups from taking the law into their own hands and whether Urziceniul will finally be able to leave behind the ghost of this day of February 2025.
