Almost two decades ago, a young band won the Global Battle of the Bands (GBOB) and travelled to London, where the quality of its compositions made a strong impression. Today, on the red carpet at the Radio Romania Music Awards, Grimus proves that a visionary’s intuition and genuine talent stand the test of time.

There are moments in the music industry that seem remarkably like a prophecy fulfilled. In 2007, when we organised the first edition of the Global Battle of the Bands (GBOB) festival in Romania, the local scene was buzzing with energy, but major international festivals seemed out of reach for many young artists. Yet, as I watched Grimus perform at the national final in Cluj, I was absolutely certain: these young musicians were not ordinary contestants, but a band destined for an extraordinary future.
They won the grand prize at the national stage and travelled to London. There, before an international jury, they received high praise for the quality of their compositions and the originality of their music. They were not simply “some Romanians who sing well”; they were a band that had found its own voice in a rapidly changing musical landscape. I still remember a conversation during a break with Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols), a member of the jury at the world final in London, when he told me that Grimus had a very good chance of winning.
Proof of an outstanding journey
Years have passed. The music scene has seen fleeting trends, bands have come and gone, but Grimus has remained consistent. The recent photograph of the band on the red carpet at the Radio Romania Music Awards confirms once again the expectations formed in that concert hall back in 2007.
Holding trophies and diplomas, the members of Grimus show that hard work, consistency and belief in their own sound are the ingredients of long-term success. The fact that they are now among the winners at an event of such importance is no coincidence. It is the result of an outstanding journey, built on strong albums, memorable live performances and a special connection with the audience.
The art of recognising future champions
This achievement confirms, once again, how important it is to recognise potential where others see only a young band. Over the years, the GBOB (Global Battle of the Bands) festival has been an important springboard for Romanian artists, showing that we made the right choices when selecting the winners.
Grimus is living proof that a competition should be more than a contest: it can be a true incubator of talent. When an artist has what it takes, the right platform can give them the opportunity to take flight.
Conclusion
Today, looking at the group photograph, with the band members’ sincere smiles and gleaming trophies, I can only feel immense satisfaction. My 2007 prophecy has been fulfilled beyond expectation. Grimus has not only stood the test of time, but has also evolved and matured, becoming one of the most respected names in Romanian alternative music. Congratulations to the band on this latest achievement! You have proved to me once again that good music and belief in a dream never go out of fashion.
