At 11:52 a.m., an ordinary Monday briefly became a test of nerves for people across Romania. The National Research and Development Institute for Earth Physics (INCDFP) reported a moderate earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 in the Vrancea seismic zone, in Buzău County.

Although a magnitude of 4.8 is not usually associated with major damage, the earthquake was felt over a wide area. It occurred near Brașov (46 km), Sfântu Gheorghe (53 km), Ploiești (56 km), Buzău (64 km), Târgoviște (78 km) and Focșani (86 km), according to INCDFP. Source: Știrile ProTV.

Bucharest feels the tremor again

Although the epicentre was in the Vrancea area, many immediate reactions came from Bucharest. Deep Vrancea earthquakes can be felt across a broad area, and residents on upper floors reported noticeable movement.

“Bucharest, third floor, about two seconds,” one user wrote on the National Institute for Earth Physics (INFP) Facebook page. Another said the tremor was clearly felt in Sector 2. No widespread panic was reported, but the shaking quickly prompted comments on social media. Read the report by Libertatea.

Official checks and responses

Shortly after the earthquake, the Bucharest–Ilfov Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (ISU BIF) sent a vehicle to the capital’s Old Town to check for possible consequences. The inspectorate said it had received no calls to the 112 emergency number. AGERPRES report.

Some users also reported temporary mobile-network problems, including difficulty connecting or making calls. Network congestion can occur when many people try to use their phones at once after a widely felt event. Mediafax report.

Felt across Romania and in the Republic of Moldova

Reports came from beyond Bucharest. Users described feeling the earthquake in Galați, Iași, Brăila, Constanța, Bacău, Ploiești and Focșani. Some said furniture or the whole building shook for several seconds. More accounts collected by Libertatea.

The tremor was also reported in the Republic of Moldova, including Chișinău. The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) estimated a depth of about 121 kilometres and placed the epicentre around 13 kilometres north-east of Nehoiu. INCDFP reported a depth of 76.5 kilometres; estimates can differ because agencies use different data and calculation methods. Moldpres · B1 TV.

The strongest earthquake of the year, but no cause for alarm

According to INCDFP, this was Romania’s strongest earthquake recorded in 2026, exceeding the magnitude-4.5 event reported in Vrancea County on 26 February. AGERPRES · Europa FM.

A magnitude-4.8 earthquake is within the range of events that occur in the Vrancea region, known for intermediate-depth seismic activity. Such earthquakes may be felt across large areas but do not necessarily cause significant damage. Their effects depend on focal depth, distance, local geology and building characteristics. Conclusion

The earthquake is a reminder that Romania lies in one of Europe’s seismically active regions. In this case, authorities reported no casualties or major damage. Earthquakes cannot be predicted precisely, but knowing basic safety procedures and staying calm can help people respond effectively.
