On 3 February 2009, the International Court of Justice in The Hague delivered its judgment in the dispute between Romania and Ukraine concerning the delimitation of the continental shelf and exclusive economic zones in the Black Sea. Of the disputed maritime area, commonly estimated at about 12,000 km², Romania obtained approximately 9,700 km². Serpents’ Island played an important role in the proceedings, but the Court decided that no base point on the island should be used for drawing the delimitation line beyond the 12-nautical-mile arc of its territorial sea.
